Have Spaceship, will bring?

If you’re like Sir Richard Branson, and was wondering what the cost of bringing your own spaceship to Fiji was, wonder no more! You’ll be happy to know that the local tarriff rates are quite…nice.

You see? 3% Fiscal Import Duty is not so bad. And the Excise is free! Though I’m not so sure about the VAT being 12.5%. That sounds a bit more heavy then I’d like it to be.

Of course. That is, if I was heading off to Mars in the next week or so.

Are you a Fiji Meats man?

Back in the 80s Fiji didn’t have TV. Believe it.

What passed for entertainment in those dark days was the billiard hall, the rugby field, and the local video store. Video stores varied from place to place, with SPR (South Pacific Recording…I know…doesn’t sound like a video store) being the main supplier of movies to the population.

When the new box of VHS tapes came from overseas, SPR would place adverts from various local companies at the beginning and end of the movies. Any type of company was game as long as they paid the dues.

From a local meat company “Fiji Meats” comes this awesome advert which basically says playing toss with a pigs head and showing close ups of grinded meat is what keeps the Fiji Meats Man going.

SPCA would be so proud. So would them vegetarians ;)

What can I say?

Fiji only has themselves to blame after the dust has settled at the IRB sevens. I could go on and string trees with a list of their short comings but in the end it would serve no purpose.

They messed up. We lose the cup.

No more victory soap adverts after the loss…and definitely not after seeing this video of Ryder’s interviewee skills off the field :( It certainly doesn’t help when you’re being interviewed on camera by a chick in a bar(nightclub?) with a ready supply of beer and girls are nearby.

“The quicker”?? Classic :D
“Lets Play Downtown…attitude”?? He should be fired -_-

Fiji/English Word of the Month

Yes thats right…a fiji/english word. This time coming from a girl who is a fijian but has lived overseas her whole life and wanted to bring herself up to speed with the local lingo. A friend of mine was helping her along by asking her various english words and seeing if she could translate them into fijian.

Hilarity ensures.

Liane says: hey wat happen wit the profile photo…camouflage jiko vei iko…lol

Interestingly “colour vata” is pretty much on the spot in a literal translation sort of way, with “vata” meaning “same”, so translated word for word it would be “colour same”.

Wish we had an urban dictionary for Fiji…now that would rock…Fiji Times own online dictionary not counted since I highly doubt you’d find “boci” within its pages.
