Finally. We get Internet TV?
Posted by Wilson in ISP, television on June 26, 2007

When it comes to entertainment in Fiji, options are far and few between. Besides the usual clubs and movies, there’s precious little that can keep you occupied on the weekend, save for rugby matches and pirate pr0n dvds from your mates.
As for free to air TV, because there’s only one channel, the ‘channel up/channel down’ buttons on your remote are pretty much useless. The paid channel Sky TV has its moments such as MTV, though why they don’t have a dedicated music channel and instead only show MTV at certain hours of the day is beyond me.
An alternative is in the works however, with the announcement that Unwired Fiji, one of the local ISPs here will be offering Streaming Services that essentially is streamed TV along a broadband connection.
Now while the article paints a rosy picture of the future of Streamed TV, forgive me for not jumping up and down with joy. I have about as much faith in local ISPs as I do in Paris Hilton being a virgin. I’m just not buying it.
From my previous posts about the local ISPs (Connect, Kidanet) it’s obvious how much I love these guys.
And what of Unwired Fiji? What about them?
I like their adverts thats for sure
Classy, to the point, and obviously of overseas standard. Though I guess I needn’t mention the fact that Unwired is in-fact an Australian company.
Their bandwidth however, leaves much to be desired. During peak hours, connection is somewhat of a hit-and-miss affair i.e. you’ll be so pissed at not being able to make a connection that you’re more then likely to take pot shots at your $99 modem with whatever you can grab hold of.
It’s ironic that as a company with the catch phrase “No Wires, No Wait, No Worries”, they actually do have a waiting time when using the line during peak hours. Go figure.
Each modem from Unwired also comes with a hidden mini-game that starts when you hook up the modem to your pc, and discover that the receiving signal isn’t strong enough for you to make a connection.
Thats when stage 1 starts. The quest to find the mythical pedestal on which to place your modem to get that link. Bear in mind that the whole game is pretty much a stage 1. If you’ve found the sweet spot, but your pc is in another room/doesn’t have enough line, then you can pretty much say you’re fucked.
After which you’d go buy a signal booster.
So if Unwired does actually bring their streaming services to Fiji and along with it a fatter bandwidth, then great. No more “Hunt for the Golden Pedestal” games.
But for now, I’m better off being stuck with them pirate lovers, Connect.
Hungry? Lunch In Suva yaaaarrrrrrr!!!1!1!

A new (relatively…I’ve been abit slow in terms of finding out new local blogs) blog has popped up that promises to save us from that age old dilemma during lunch hour: Where to chow in Suva?
Lunch In Suva is a great blog which does all the running around/food sampling/waiting-in-line chores that you would normally go through when still making up your mind about where to eat. Assuming of course if you don’t already have a favourite place to lunch at, your own office desk not counted.
They’re doing a circuit around the city, checking in at the most popular and frequented spots, and see whether your precious one hour of lunch should be spent at that particular lunch spot or not in your attempts to woo the girl/guy of the day…or…boss.
Restaurants which cater for the large and many, coffee shops looking out for the business guy on the move, infamous eateries that have made their living by reputation alone, no place is spared.
Pictures of the meals are provided, as well as costings of some of the more popular dishes. At the end of the review, a simple thumbs up or thumbs down is enough to tell you if this is the place to eat at.
Be sure to drop by their site. You’ll definitely thank them later if you need the perfect place to meet up with your…infidelity friend (LT!)
Note: By the way, Lunch in Suva is in no way associated with FMF and their fucking annoying jingle/Torture-device Chow Noodles brand. The same goes for Ramen Noodles. Ramen Noodles rock
Major Pote of the Month
Posted by Wilson in ...ofthemonth, pic on June 17, 2007
When it comes to the news print media, errors are pointed out not by single clients, but by anyone and everyone who buys the paper in question, which, in this case study, just happened to be everyone in Fiji.
Our Major Pote of the Month goes to a local newspaper that has yet to learn the importance of “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

Thats right people. According to The Daily Post, we “won” the 2007 IRB Sevens World Cup. Which we so did not

I’m not sure when the paper WENT to print, (thank you Allen for the grammatical correction
) but this was most probably when Fiji was leading briefly in the second half. I wonder if people at The Daily Post died after the game finished, with our team grabbing at thin air and them for excuses before head rolling time ^_^
Epic stuff really. One that must live on in local lore for eons to come.
PS: “Pote” is local slang for…involving yourself in a major mess up and coming out looking like a total fool. Word.
The Local Online Presence…
The thing is, this is a common fact across the board when it comes to the locals understanding the importance of having a website. Most major companies have websites, but most people are oblivious to its advantages. It would be nice to see websites on things such as local events eg. a Hibiscus festival website etc.
Local blogs are another story. Due to the relative ease of starting a blog, we are in no short supply for local blogging content. Heck this blog you’re reading is proof! Although lately, with all the fuss about political blogs getting the spotlight, non-controversy bloggists like us seem to be getting a slightly bad name.
Here’s hoping that common sense, a healthy dose of kava, and links to the Fiji Meats Man video will prevail.
Have Spaceship, will bring?

You see? 3% Fiscal Import Duty is not so bad. And the Excise is free! Though I’m not so sure about the VAT being 12.5%. That sounds a bit more heavy then I’d like it to be.
Of course. That is, if I was heading off to Mars in the next week or so.
